Sacred Prayers

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all the worlds. The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Master of the Day of Judgment. You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help. Guide us on the Straight Path — the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked anger or of those who are astray. Amen.

Form is emptiness, emptiness is form. Emptiness is not other than form; form is not other than emptiness. Whatever is form is emptiness; whatever is emptiness is form. The same is true of feelings, perceptions, mental formations, and consciousness. Gate gate pāragate pārasaṃgate bodhi svāhā — Gone, gone, gone beyond, gone completely beyond — Awakening! So be it.

Hear, O Israel: The LORD is our God, the LORD is One. Blessed be the Name of His glorious kingdom for ever and ever. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

Om Bhur Bhuvaḥ Swaḥ — Tat Savitur Vareṇyaṃ — Bhargo Devasya Dhīmahi — Dhiyo Yo Naḥ Prachodayāt. We meditate on the glory of the Creator who has created the Universe, who is worthy of worship, who is the embodiment of knowledge and light, who is the remover of all sins and ignorance. May He enlighten our intellect.

Ik Onkar — There is One God. Sat Naam — His Name is Truth. Karta Purakh — He is the Creator. Nirbhau — He is without fear. Nirvair — He is without hate. Akal Murat — He is beyond time and death. Ajuni — He is unborn. Saibhang — He is self-illuminated. Gur Prasad — He is realized by the Guru's grace. Jap — Meditate! Ad Sach — He was true in the beginning. Jugad Sach — He was true throughout the ages. Hai Bhi Sach — He is still true. Nanak Hosi Bhi Sach — Nanak says He shall ever be true.

I bear witness, O my God, that Thou hast created me to know Thee and to worship Thee. I testify, at this moment, to my powerlessness and to Thy might, to my poverty and to Thy wealth. There is none other God but Thee, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting.

Harae tamae, kiyome tamae — Purify us, cleanse us. We humbly pray before the great kami of heaven and earth. May our hearts be pure, our minds be clear, our bodies be clean. May all impurities be swept away like morning mist before the rising sun. We offer our gratitude for the blessings of life, nature, and community. Kashikomi kashikomi mo maōsu — With deep reverence, we speak.

Ashem Vohu Vahishtem Asti — Righteousness is good, it is best. Happy is the person who is righteous for the sake of the best righteousness. Ushta asti ushta ahmai — Happiness to him who brings happiness to others. Hyat ashai vahishtai ashem — For the sake of the best righteousness.

Namo Arihantanam — I bow to the Arihantas (perfected souls). Namo Siddhanam — I bow to the Siddhas (liberated souls). Namo Ayariyanam — I bow to the Acharyas (masters). Namo Uvajjhayanam — I bow to the Upadhyayas (teachers). Namo Loe Savva Sahunam — I bow to all the Sadhus (monks) in the world. Eso Panch Namokkaro — These five salutations. Savva Pavappanasano — Destroy all sins. Mangalanam Cha Savvesim — And of all auspicious things. Padhamam Havai Mangalam — This is the first and foremost.

The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name. The nameless is the beginning of heaven and earth. The named is the mother of ten thousand things. Ever desireless, one can see the mystery. Ever desiring, one can see the manifestations. These two spring from the same source but differ in name; this appears as darkness. Darkness within darkness — the gate to all mystery.
